Bacon “Skins”

August 28th, 2008

The answer to the question you’re surely asking me is, “Yes.  That is bacon.”

The answer to your next question is “No.  Get your own.”

This post is about the fortuitious discovery of bacon where I least expected it — on the online music sharing site Pandora.  They have some deal with Wendy’s that tempts users like me with photos of sweet swine.

Marketing friends, did you take note?

Want to share your iTunes with me?

August 16th, 2008

I’ve been waiting for this kind of thing for a long, long, time.

Simplifymedia.com has created a way to share your iTunes music among your selected friends.  Their (free!) software runs in the background of your computer and adds the names of all your friends’ iTunes folders right in your iTunes.  This allows live music selection and streaming, but doesn’t allow you to make copies (due to Apple’s DRM obligations to the record companies.)

You can even share your music to your iPhone in case that song or podcast you want to listen to didn’t sync last time you connected to your computer.

To try it, go to www.simplifymedia.com and download the application for your computer. You’ll be asked to create a (free) account.  Then, add/invite your friends (my screen name is Rusharound) and what’s mine will be yours and vice versa.   Try it!

Preview – The Hambletiny

August 14th, 2008

We just got back from having our first ultrasound and we can confirm that Hambletiny appears to have the requisite limbs, digits, and even a dancing and hiding verve that made the process take a longer than it ordinarily does.  (For that we thank you, little one. We love the chance to see you for the first time!)

The tech took lots of pictures but we’re only sharing this one for now.

Stay tuned!  – R and S.

What?  You say this post is missing some important details?   We’re keeping certain news a secret for another two weeks until we can welcome Sarah’s brother and sister in law’s little bundle of joy into the world.   But keep watching this space – we’ve got some fun things planned.

Freedom (from the internet)

August 13th, 2008

Okay, so I love the internet. iGuilty

But once in awhile the internets keeps me from getting things done, and for this reason I’m happy to have discovered a temporary internet disabling application called Freedom (from tuaw.com).

It’s really simple (Mac-only) software that disconnects the computer from the internet for as many minutes as you’d like.  Once it’s enabled, the only way to get back online is to restart the computer or, you know, actually wait for the timer to finish and maybe get some real work done.  Consider it free discipline for those of us who don’t have any.

I’m giving it a try this week.  If you’re curious to know how it goes, send me an email.  Just don’t expect an immediate reply.

(Hats off to the HankandWillie household, where they pay their phone company to disable the internet, but that’s another story.)

Shout out to the Nantucket Atheneum

August 6th, 2008

What do you do when you are at an island town on a topless boat in the rain? Find an interesting place to seek free shelter, of course.

Special thanks to the good people at the Nantucket Atheneum for wisely opening their great hall to transient computer users. So civilized!

Also mad props to Steve Jobs for making a 3G iPhone that let me post this without having to wait for a computer to become available.

For Sale: A (very small) boat!

August 4th, 2008

Part of our committment to Lightening Up, I’m selling my RC Laser.  It works fine and can be yours if you want to buy it.  (Tony B, I know you’re reading this!)

More pictures.  (These things are raced all the time – check out the photos from the RC Laser National Championships.)  Email me if you are interested.

Maternity Suits

July 29th, 2008

Yesterday Sarah and I went shopping for some new clothes because she doesn’t seem to be fitting in her old ones anymore.

I don’t have anything quippy to say, so entertain yourself by clicking on that little picture to the left.

(What’? You’re a guy and you don’t know what I’m wearing?  It’s a faux tummy so pregnant moms can see how they’ll fit into clothes when they are pregnant-er.)

Whales, Birds and Tweets

July 28th, 2008

I think this is a story about “the long tail.” (I haven’t read the book, so use the comment section to correct me if I’m wrong).  Several months ago Sarah and I got a nice invitation that included crazy artwork of a whale and birds.  Really crazy, but attractive.  We found out that the art was available for sale on istockphoto.com.

So we bought it online (cheeps!) and had it framed.  (Yes, we know this is contrary to our Lighten Up campaign.  Please don’t use the comment box to remind us of that.)

Imagine our surprise when Sarah tried to log on to web-sensation Twitter.com to find that it’s their default artwork when their site is down! So, um, does this make us twendy?
