The curious story of Brandon Bell

About a month ago my school’s admissions office introduced me to an MBA applicant who had been accepted into the program. They thought I should meet him because he wants to start an adventure sailing company someday.

Since I like talking about business and sailing, I agreed, and Brandon and I spent the next four weeks trying to find time to reach each other. This was made more difficult because he just moved to Cowes, England for a captain’s course there. After many missed attempts, I finally got to Skype with Brandon this week. And boy did it get weird.

We started out talking about business school, then his captain’s course, some knots, and ActionQuest and all that. At one point in the conversation he said something about a Rover.

“Are you a Rover guy?” I asked.

He said he became one in 2003 when he bought a 1973, Series III Land Rover in Newport, RI from a guy named Rush.

August 21, 2003: Me, Brandon, and unknown friend – the day Brandon bought Betty Rover

Brandon driving away in his new Land Rover

That was 5 and a half years ago. In the meantime, the Rover went to Guam. (That’s worth repeating, Brandon took the car with him to Guam, but I don’t think he drove it there.)

And now he’s deciding on an MBA program and talking on the phone with me.

It’s a small, small world.

(P.S. If you’re interested in the car, the complete, happy story is here.)
