This weekend, Sarah and I drove to see her brother and sister-in-law’s house in Gansevoort, NY. It’s not far from Saratoga Springs, offering the chance at some rural and semi-metropolitan fun. Thanks for having us, Dunbars! (And happy Moms’ day to all the mothers out there…)

“Smug, Nanner-Nanner-Nanner” alert..
It looks like a diesel Volkswagen, even one burning a meager 20% biodiesel, is easier on the world’s fossil fuels than a Toyota Prius hybrid. So says a University of New Hampshire study recently reported by AutoBlogGreen.
I’ve been sizzling with bio-energy-pride this week because I found a biodiesel source made from a local restaurant’s cast off fryolater oil. (Eat at Redbones, please!) I’m done bragging now.

Yippee! Best-friend (and best-man at my wedding and vice-versa at his wedding) Marc was the graduation speaker at yesterday’s ceremony. He spoke to a crowd of 19,000 people! From NYU’s Website:
The undergraduate student speaker at the 2007 Commencement Exercises was Marc Gustafson, who received a B.A. from the McGhee Division of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. After leaving college 1997, he founded a non-profit, Reach the World, to teach low-income students about world cultures and geography, and sailed around the world sharing his geographic adventures with New York City public school children. He returned to school in NYU’s Paul McGhee Division for adult learners, where he received the Schlansky Research Scholarship. He also received a Marshall Scholarship and will pursue a master’s degree at Oxford beginning this fall.
Way to go Marc!

… and how they are worth a thousand words? Well, I stumbled on a website that graphically shows this concept. (Yes, very meta, I know).
Basically, artist Chris Jordan uses piles of objects to show what 2.56 million bottles or 426,000 cell phones look like. Yes, honey, we are living in a material world.

The NYYC’s Spring 2007 Magazine included this charismatic broach by a Swan 45 in Maremma, Italy. The photo was so good, in fact, that I was prompted to determine if the photographer shared my interest in others’ yachting disasters. Carnage Ho!
Not only does John Robinson Taylor’s website have photos of sailboat crashes, he has a whole section of ’em (select “Broach” at the bottom)!
I used to wonder why checkstand magazines put pictures of newly-bloated supermodels on their covers. Now I get it.

On Saturday, Sarah and I went to a fantastic party thrown by our friends Annie and Bill. It was so good, in fact, that I’m going to try and reverse engineer the evening so we can all learn how to do it. More details after the jump.

I once heard an orthodontist defend his high rates this way. “You’re not paying for what it is,” he said, pointing to his patient’s new shiny grill, “you’re paying for what it does.” I have often thought this defense describes how many consumer goods are priced.
I was recently reminded of this when I went to CVS and found that the quart-cost of a treatment I badly needed was $9,592. Realize, my friendly readers, that for $9.5k could fly to Australia and back two times and while owning a one brand new a Segway… …in each continent.
But instead of those extravagances, my health situation forces me to buy .00125 quarts of the magic juice shown above. Can you guess what this stuff does? Read the rest of this entry »

If you know me, you know that anything I do on the computer is either trial and error, or the result of many hours previous spent trying and erring. Recently, I’ve devoted a lot of time to all the stuff at the right of this page, and one part seems to be particularly difficult — the links to AllConsuming.net’s list of things I’m consuming.
Despite my best efforts, I cannot seem to get the javascript there to produce the pictures of the things on my list (with the exception of movies and books, which aren’t on my list too often). Is anyone willing to take a look at this? What would inspire you to share a solution with me?
P.S. I’ve also put a shout out to DoMyStuff.com. I really want this to work!
