One (additional?) Thing You Should Know About Breast Cancer

teamwhymommy.jpgOkay friends and loved ones. A non-binding, anonymous, not-graded, but very important question coming up here. Place your hands at your keyboards and answer this:

The symptoms of Breast Cancer are:

(Click the link below when you are done)
If you answered, “irritated, red, itching, stabbing pain, or dimpling — but no perceptible lump” then you are excused for recess. The rest of you? Gather ’round long enough to hear a story that could save someone’s life.

Our good friend Anna has quickly joined the ranks of the mommy-blogging corps, making nice online friendships with other mothers all over the planet. One of her new friends, a 34 year old mother of two, was just diagnosed with a type of breast cancer that never presented the famous “lump” you’ve been taught to check for. She has Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) and it’s every bit as dangerous as the sort you’re more familiar with, but few women know anything about it. After this woman was diagnosed, she asked that all bloggers (I’m suspending my distaste for that word for the duration of this most-serious post) spread the word about this lurking killer.

If you’ve read this far and want to know more, I’m going to send you to my friend Anna’s site, where you can read more about this gnarly disease.

Rush, you make the world better by things like this…

In addition to IBC and lumps, don’t ignore “funny”, recurrent feelings your breasts and under your arms. That’s how mine was diagnosed. The mammo’s didn’t show what the biopsies did; the radiologist finally woke up when he saw the biopsy results. The whole while, I felt like a hypochondriac… Quite flat now, but happy and alive!
