Experimental New Section — Ask Rush

Ask RushHello, this is Rush, How can I help you?

Today Hoss emailed me with a scootering question. I was going to reply with my answer but then thought — maybe the world should know this stuff? So, thanks to His Hossness’ prompting, I’m going to try an experimental new section. Ask Rush.

Have a question of your own? Please, please, please make me feel useful by passing it on in the comments section. And now, on to Hoss’ question…

Hoss- [Ed. note: Hoss refers to everyone as Hoss. In this case, it means “Rush”]
I went to West Marine today and bought (among other things) a chart. I was on my scooter, so transporting a 3 foot long paper item that I was trying not to bend was a slight challenge. But i succeeded.
I was wondering what is the most challenging item(s) you have carried on your scooter? Either in mass, or, more likely, in shape or size. This usually seems to be the more challenging items for me. But perhaps you don’t use yours when you need to carry items?
Just curious…
Great to see you both yesterday.
Hope it happens again soon-
hoss

Dear Hoss:

There are two answers to this question. First – the hardest thing I’ve tried to carry was actually a fresh pizza. This is because my scooter requires me to shift using my left hand while operating the throttle with my right hand, leaving exactly no hand to hold the pizza. Like you, I succeeded, but I don’t know how nor do I care to try again.

I appreciate your use of the word “challenge.” Before I had a washer and dryer I used to challenge myself to see how many loads of laundry I could fit on the scooter on the way to the laundromat. My record was three, thanks to an internal frame backpack meant for multi-day treks in the woods and an L.L. Bean tote bag between my knees. Though I am famous for losing my socks, I never lost one to Old Man Highway. But now you know why my parents forbade me from getting a scooter when I first asked them for permission to buy one ten years earlier to travel between my school and the boat.  (Dad’s [proven reasonable] rationale —You’ll probably try and carry the spinnaker or something on the darn thing.” Actual quote!)

No laundry or spinnakers here.  Headed to Block Island for a week of sailing

Confession: I couldn’t actually ride it with all this stuff.

My most precious cargo? That’d be the one I picked up at my wedding:

So, you want a hard question.

    Hoss-
Have you started working on your halloween costume yet?
On a more personal level – how does the amount of effort another person puts into a costume affect your response to the costume?
If I rent an Aquaman costume that looks awesome, actually has a speaking seahorse that can swim underwater, and makes me look like the buff superhero I am in real life – is that as impressive as the Aquaman who dresses up in green sweatpants and an orange sweatshirt with a broom stick for a seahorse (seahoss) – if they have gone through some effort to but scale-like plastic pieces on their sweatclothes and make a cardboard cutout of a seahorse head for the broom? It’s these important questions that keep me from getting a lot of work done…
