Still Standing!

standing-desk-with-the-sombrero-cam.jpgSurprise! A NEW post! I bet you didn’t think you’d see another one of these. I’ve been spending so much time doing indoor, unspectacular things that there hasn’t been time to generate the stories that I’d like to put up here. Lucky for me, I love what I’m doing.

Today I’m going to share a little slice of this indoor lifestyle, specifically a little bit about stand up desks. (I’ll also explain the silly hat.) Check it out after the jump.

Back in my wage earning days, I preferred to stand. This started at a previous job when my back and general sedentaryness prompted me to put my computer on an overturned milk crate. I moved up in the world and configured my next work desk by raising the cubicle shelf like this: (Look at the laptop on the right.)

The great thing about this set up is that I can stand (at the right) or just sit down (chair not shown) without having to change anything. There’s a keyboard and mouse at both stations.

Feeling my workplace-productivity oats, I tried another innovation – the sombrero-cam:
Standing Desk (with the Sombrero Cam)

The idea here was that others in our remote office could see whatever I was looking at.  Usually this was an architectural plan, but often it was a cartoon or my navel. The sombrero cam limited my career options and was discontinuted.

Next I made a stand up desk at home.

In this configuration, I use the flat monitor while standing up and the laptop while sitting – but the consequence is the same – seamless transition from sitting to standing.

Most recently, I made a temporary stand up desk in an office I’ll only use until May.

This one uses two C-clamps, a 4×4 chunk of wood, a melamine sheet and a threaded rod. It works great!

So next time you wonder what I’m doing when I’m not posting items here, at least you’ll know that I’m not sitting idle.
