California Trip – Part IV: Surfing
Grew up in California? Yes.
Grew up surfing? No. (Despite the best intentions of my good uncle Rob.) Rob’s a super-successful orthodontist in Pasadena with a passion for surfing.
He’s been doing it since high school. The most stunning proof of this is the house he and Aunt Cindy bought near Gaviota, CA at a place called the Hollister Ranch. It’s a real working ranch with cattle and all that, but it’s most famous for its surf. And if you click the link just after this sentence, you’ll see more about that place, even some video of me piloting a real life surfboard.
Hollister Ranch is a big deal. Kids from UCSB get in little boats and motor for two or more hours just to get up to the Hollister Ranch to surf. Why? Because the conditions are just so great and and the security guards are so relentless at keeping the public out. If you’re not a guest of a Hollister Ranch parcel owner, they won’t let you in the gate. My sister tells me that Jimmy Buffett recenly dedicated a song to the guards at the Hollister Ranch.
And, when my aunt and uncle there, it’s a really fun place to visit.
Gearing up for the day
Typical scene at the beach (yes, everyone drives on the beach).
Rarely seen at the beach: almost no surf.
Even more rare: Rush on a surfboard.
(The wave wasn’t as big as it looks there).
I guess I had a good time.

Love it. Great photos from the trip! Meredith is beautiful, and Katherine looks great, too. Last time I saw her she was pregnant at a wedding, too! 🙂
