Block Island Race Week, Part I

Block IslandI just got back from Block Island Race Week where I sailed on Richard’s new X-35 (sailboat). BIRW, if you haven’t been there before, is one of the most festive combinations of boats and booze you can find in New England. As usual, Richard assembled a fantastic crew and invited me along, too. We finished in fourth place with lots of good stories.

More details after the jump.

One of the of non-sailing highlights for me was to have the Vespa in such a scooter-friendly place. Big thanks to Jared for helping me get it to the ferry dock in Point Judith and, the real favor, returning the trailer to U-Haul. As you can see, there wasn’t much chance of riding it anyplace with all the crapola I brought with me.

The house Richard rented turned out to be the kind of place I hope to retire in. (Thanks to John for finding such a great spot!) Previously owned by single handed sailor Joe Harris, it is a 4 minute scooter ride from the marina with incredible views of the ocean and the island’s “Salt Pond” that now serves as its main harbor.

The House:

One small difficulty was finding the little house’s little dirt driveway. John and I found some paint and wood and made a little sign.

(Xhibition is the name of the boat)

We installed it at the head of the driveway by nailing it to a garden hoe and planting it in the ground.

Yeah, that’s right. I nailed a hoe in my first hour on the island. More stories (and silly puns) to come.

Crew: Ryan, Rush, John, Tony, Pirate, John, Rob, Carston, Richard

I did it in the basement — very dark down there so I hardly noticed.
